you want to be a family nurse pritnicaoter and although I may be a bit biased, I think that's an excellent choice! But who knows, maybe you'll realize that you love working with the elderly, or the newborns, or even the psychiatric patients. For me, I obtained my BSN, worked for 3 years as an RN in various wards, and then spent two years becoming an NP while also working part-time as an RN still. I started having children one year after I became a nurse pritnicaoter. I'm glad I didn't have children immediately after I became an NP, because I honestly think I might have had a nervous breakdown. You asked about how difficult the school work is. Personally, I thought the education part (for both my BSN and MSN) was challenging but always manageable. Yes, there were some sleepless nights stressful cram sessions, but overall I never felt oppressed by the workload. Trust me, as long as you stay focused and determined to reach your goal, you will be able to become a successful nurse. However, I would NOT recommend having children during BSN school. It would be too much for anyone to handle it wouldn't be fair to yourself, your children, or your patients.Lastly, since you're wondering about being a mother and a nurse at the same time, I'm not going to lie and say that it's super easy. Both careers (yes, I'm calling motherhood a career!) are tiring and difficult but fortunately, both have wonderful rewards. A bonus about nursing is that the schedules are usually rather flexible; for example, when my oldest was born, I only worked part time. That was immensely helpful and allowed me to have plenty of time with my son, but I still was able to work and support myself. If you're worried that you'll waste too much of your time in school and will delay your time to have children, please realize that I was 28 when I had my first baby, which is still rather young. Or you could become an RN, start a family, and wait until later to become an NP (maybe in your 30s or even 40s?). The good news is that there are so many options; you will figure it out, and everything will work out just fine!As a mother, I get to watch my two little boys grow into amazing young men. As a nurse, I get to help those in need every single day it's truly one of the most satisfying, fulfilling, and caring professions. Despite the stress, I start each day feeling excited and end each day feeling accomplished. Not everyone is lucky enough to say that.I wish you the best of luck, and as long as you manage your time carefully, you can and WILL become an amazing nurse and mother. Again, congrats, and welcome to one of the most compassionate, rewarding, relevant careers ever! xo Mary
